#iamimaji: The Soul of Taman Hayat

Plants and humans have a special bond. The vital relationships between the two have been studied and continue to prove how the deep connections between humans and plants are unbreakable. It started as a hobby and love for collecting indoor plants, Indra and Monic created Taman Hayat as their love manifestation for bizarre and unique plants.

The connection between humans and plans is often overlooked, especially in the life of Jakarta’s bustling concrete jungle. Taman Hayat believes the more urban our lifestyle is, the bigger the need to reconnect with nature. Choosing the keyword “Kehidupan” as what sets them apart from others, as the name “Taman Hayat” itself literally means taman. It is what inspires Indra & Monic to begin Taman Hayat with the spirit of their movement #SurelyGreenIsGood.

Started in the comfort of their own home, Indra and Monic finally opened their store in 2023 due to their growing team and inventories. Now with their growing family as well, their hobbies include camping to reconnect with nature and spend quality time with their son, Biren. One day a fun holiday trip to Japan unexpectedly sparked a new opportunity for them. Indra and Monic visited a store in Japan that first inspired them to open Taman Hayat, but little did they know their good intentions were met with open arms from the Japanese brand. The interaction grew into a special relationship that blossoms into their partnership today. Now they specialize in handmade ceramics that are exported to Japan.

“RAGAM” Working Dynamic

Q: Can you describe the working dynamic in an environment with RAGAM individuals?/RAGAM plants?

A: “Just like plants, humans came with different background and culture, we embrace it (because every human being and creature is unique in their own way).”

As these plants are unique or bizarre on their own, it deserves an equally unique home. Taman Hayat paired each plant with a handcrafted ceramic vessel that was specially designed. Now exporting to Japan as well, there are challenges including the high standard of quality control, and the nature of minor imperfections of handmade ceramics, as well as time management with local artisans. Therefore communication, understanding, and kindness are the keys to every closing door. Each plant and ceramic pots are carefully curated, making each of them a testimony of their dedication. Although nestled far away from the city center, their store stands out with its unique display of plants, quality gardening products, artisanal ceramics, and home goods.

“We embrace processes. We celebrate small wins. Understanding that literally everything in life has its own season. We learned a lot from plants. Plants have the ability to adapt to changing seasons, and this ability helps them to thrive. This is a great example that reflects our journey in facing challenges during the pursuit of our creative processes.” — Taman Hayat

More than just your local plant shop, Taman Hayat commits to its green movement to contribute conserving the earth. With every purchase, five percent of the sales will be donated to environmental organizations or NGOs that mainly focus on the conservation of wildlife, nature, ocean cleanup, and forest/tree replanting. Taman Hayat also uses sustainable packaging in an effort to reduce plastic usage and encourage customers to reuse and recycle the packaging. Every purchase of Taman Hayat comes with green goodness!
