#imajinspires: SOUP - Sounds of Unknown Pleasure

Once a month in the heart of Jakarta’s bustling city, loud jazz music can be heard humming around the neighborhood, wrapping the noise of buzzing cars with smooth and rhythmic tunes. SOUP is a collaboration project by Jazz Picnic Indonesia, Tengah, and IMAJI Studio. It is something familiar, cozy, hearty, and a mix of different ingredients that come together beautifully. Combining Jazz, Living Space, and Apparel— the three main ingredients to create intimate sessions, deep conversations, and all for the sake of arts.

SOUP aims to serve soulful, intimate live music sessions. Our purpose is to:

  1. Discover music with rich roots and history through performances.
  2. Provide a space for talented musicians to express themselves authentically, showcasing their unique side as a fresh discovery for audiences or to revive something they have not felt in a long time.
  3. Offer an opportunity for musicians and audience to engage directly and to inspire each other. Musicians who are a part of the audience are welcome to join in and jam together, creating an organic and authentic music experience.

SOUP always takes place on the last Sunday of the month to emphasize what Sundays should be: time for relaxing, unwinding, and enjoying good music with good vibes. Sunday gives flexibility for people to come and watch our session as a way for them to spend time in excitement, ending the month on the perfect note. From kids to seniors, SOUP is a family-friendly space where music enthusiasts feel welcome.

What makes SOUP different from the others is the main menu and ingredients that we serve. SOUP offers space for creatives to enjoy raw live music, DJ sets, and be a part of the community that nurtures the roots of arts. Spontaneous jamming sessions are encouraged, creating one-of-a-kind collaboration between musicians that happens only in that SOUP session. SOUP highlights curated skillful musicians, well-known and newcomer artists, as well as highlighting special items from IMAJI Studio and Tengah’s communal space and exclusive rooms.

SOUP with Barry Likumahuwa Jazz Connection is our first and pilot event held on Sunday, 21st July 2024. With the enthusiasm we receive, we continue the series with our second session: “SOUP JAZZ QUINTET” on Sunday, 1st September 2024. Each of the sessions are uploaded on Youtube, sharing the captivating performances for everyone to enjoy. Looking ahead, we are excited to continue the series and serve more soulful and rich sounds of live jazz performed by talented Indonesian musicians.
